Admission Requirements
The minimum admission requirement for a postsecondary program is an
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or its equivalent, at the general
level (college preparation level or university preparation level) or
higher, or eligibility as a mature student.
Some programs have additional admission requirements.
These may include specific secondary school courses, voluntary work experience,
and others. Please refer to the specific admission requirements sections
of each program.
Applicants 19 years of age or older (on or before
a program begins) and who do not possess an Ontario Secondary School
Diploma (OSSD), or its equivalent, may be eligible for admission.
Ontario Secondary School
Diploma (OSSD) Equivalents:
If you attended secondary school in another province or country, you
must prove that your educational standing is equivalent to the Ontario
Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Oxford will recognize
the following as equivalent to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma
(OSSD):
• All Canadian provinces: successful completion of a grade 12 diploma
except for the Province of Quebec where the equivalent is Secondary
V.
• GED: successfully passed General Educational Development (GED)
tests.
• United States: successful completion of
a grade 12 diploma with a minimum of 16 credit units including 4 English
credits.
• United Kingdom and Commonwealth Countries: General Certificate
of Education showing passes in five academic subjects, of which one
is English, at the Ordinary Level. A minimum grade representing 60 percent
or higher (at A, B or C, or 1, 2 or 3). (Where applicants have taken
CXC examinations, prior to 1998, the acceptable grades are A and B or
I or II.)
• India and Pakistan: Applicants should have completed studies
at a recognized institution of higher learning (i.e., studies beyond
the Intermediate Examination level with high standing), preferably in
the first division.
• Hong Kong: Hong Kong English School Certificate (from 1965),
showing passes in six academic subjects, each with a minimum ‘C’
Grade.
• PR China, Japan and Korea: successful completion of a high school
grade 3 diploma with minimum 60 percent Grade.
• Other Countries: Applicants from other countries are considered
on an individual basis. International documents with English translation
will be evaluated by the Office of Admissions, Registration & Records
Admission of Students for whom English is a Second
Language
Oxford’s official Language is English. All the activities
(lectures, seminars, laboratories) at Oxford are conducted in
the English language, it is imperative that students be proficient in
written and spoken English.
Applicants under this category may be required
to satisfy the above requirements by submitting results of a recent
TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the Oxford
Test of English Language Proficiency.
TOEFL Test Score Requirements:
500 paper-based testing or 175 computer-based testing;
or
IELTS (International English Language Testing):
Overall minimum score of 6.0 (with no single test score below 5.5);
or
MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery):
A score of 75 on the Michigan English Language
Assessment Battery will also meet our English proficiency requirement;
or
English as Second Language (ESL) program:
Successful completion of level eight of the English as Second Language
program to improve language skills before being admitted to the
College program of choice.
Those students enrolled at Oxford who are
experiencing language difficulties may also be referred to special English
classes as part of the program.
